Il Ghetto Ebraico

The Ghetto was established in 1714, but the Jewish presence in Santa Fiora is documented from 1457 to the late 18th century.
From the mid-16th century, small States in southern Tuscany offered protection to Jews fleeing the Papal States and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
Duke Federico Sforza Cesarini of Santa Fiora, in 1708, issued the Privileges of the Jews, in which he confirmed the rights acquired by the local community up to that time, including the freedom of residence and of not carrying distinctive signs.
The synagogue, described in the mid-18th century, was located in what is now Piazza del Ghetto.
